UIN Bukittinggi Joins League of Tropical Universities
Bukittinggi — As of midBukittinggi. UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi has officially joined the League of Tropical Universities (LTU), a global alliance of higher education institutions from countries across the tropical belt. The university’s membership marks a strategic move to expand its international collaboration network and enhance Indonesia’s contribution to sustainable tropical science.
Rector of UIN Bukittinggi, Prof. Dr. Silfia Hanani, M.Si., welcomed the development as a significant milestone for the university’s academic community, providing greater opportunities to engage with global scholars, particularly on issues related to tropical regions.
“This membership is a pivotal moment for UIN Bukittinggi to take part in global discussions about the future of tropical areas. We are ready to contribute through relevant and collaborative research,” said Prof. Silfia.
Dr. Edi Rosman, Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Alumni, and Partnerships, explained that the LTU is a non-profit, non-governmental alliance founded in 2023 by Hainan University and the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS). “The goal of LTU is to foster collaboration among tropical universities in higher education, research, innovation, and cultural exchange,” he said.
According to Dr. Irwandi, Head of UIN Bukittinggi’s International Office, the LTU has grown to include 101 member universities from 41 countries as of 2025. “On the official LTU website, UIN Bukittinggi is listed under the name ‘Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Islamic State University,’” he noted.
He added that UIN Bukittinggi is the first Islamic state university from Indonesia to become a member of the LTU. In addition to the university’s academic profile, its admission into the alliance was also made possible through strategic international networking, including ties with Prof. Luo Qingming, President of Hainan University, China, and Prof. (Adj) Yusuf Liu Boujan, the official representative of the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI) organization in China.
“As an LTU member, UIN Bukittinggi now has direct access to key strategic programs such as the annual high-level summit, faculty and student exchange initiatives, and multilateral research collaborations,” Dr. Irwandi concluded.
